When it comes to PAIN……..You are not alone!
The Global Burden of Disease, (GBD, 2019) alongside the World Health Organisation (WHO 2021) have outlined that headaches, neck pain, back pain and depression all contribute towards the top ten causes of overall disease burden. The disabling and painful features of these conditions continue to contribute towards the major causes of disability and reason for time being lost due to illness. Headache disorders are also estimated as the most common type of nervous system disorders (IHS, 2021 & WHO, 2021).
What does the NHS say about Chiropractic care ?
“Chiropractic is a treatment where a practitioner called a chiropractor uses their hands to help relieve problems with the bones, muscles and joints”
Is there any evidence that Chiropractic Care can actually help me ?
It all depending on the nature of your pain, the source, duration and any comorbidities you may have.
Several studies have shown how Chiropractic Care can considerably reduce pain intensity, functional disability and headache frequency in many medium to large sample size RCT studies, with sound methodological quality.
For instance, Rolle et al., (2014), demonstrated a 33% reduction in Tension Type headache frequency in adult patients in their study (sample size, n = 40). Cerritelli et al., (2015) also recorded several positive changes in their study (n = 105). Patients in their intervention group reported reductions in pain severity and functional disability, from 3 to 0 days (100% reduction) compared with 3 to 2 days (67% reduction) and 3 to 3 days (0% reduction) when compared to sham and control groups respectively. Both Rolle et al., (2014) and Cerritelli et al., (2015) documented patient withdrawals alongside their randomisation and blinding processes, indicating good methodological quality through adopting stringent measures.
SMT has also shown to elicit various cerebellar and neurophysiological effects by desensitising hypomobile areas, thus increasing awareness, confidence in range of movement, reducing tissue tone and reducing overall pain.
